Monitors systems for attacks, investigates incidents and closes weaknesses before they are exploited. Usually entered after some years in networks or support, not straight from school.
Mathematics is strongly recommended; Mathematical Literacy is accepted on some certification routes.
This is rarely a first job. Most people start in IT support or networking, then add security certifications (CompTIA Security+, and later specialist credentials) or a BSc Computer Science / IT (NQF 7) with a security focus. Expect two to four years in another IT role first. Entry requirements differ by institution and provider - confirm directly with the institution.
