Makes functional or artistic objects in clay - throwing, glazing and firing. Combines craft skill with running a small business.

School subjects

Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy is accepted; Visual Arts helps.

How you qualify

A Diploma or Degree in Ceramic Design or Fine Art (NQF 6-7), or a Services SETA / craft-sector learnership, or apprenticeship in a working studio. Many practitioners are self-employed, so business skills matter as much as craft. Entry requirements differ by institution - confirm directly with the institution.

Universities, Universities of Technology and DHET-registered private art and design institutions

Confirm the requirements directly with the institution before your subject selection form is signed. In KwaZulu-Natal, applications go through the Central Applications Office (cao.ac.za).
