Aircraft Mechanic

Realistic

Maintains, inspects and repairs aircraft and their systems to strict airworthiness standards. Every task is documented and signed for; there is no room for improvisation.

This career needs Core Mathematics.
Mathematical Literacy is not accepted for it at South African universities. This choice is made in Grade 9, for Grade 10 — and it is very difficult to reverse later. If this career is on your list, take Core Mathematics.

School subjects

Mathematics (NOT Mathematical Literacy), Physical Sciences and English are normally required; good eyesight and no colour blindness.

How you qualify

Training as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer through a South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) approved training organisation, combining theory examinations with several years of documented practical experience, leading to a SACAA Aircraft Maintenance Engineer licence with category ratings. The licence, not the course, is what allows you to certify work. Entry requirements differ by training organisation - confirm directly with the institution.
